This is Mr. Dale DeLange from Michigan. He's a red berry farmer and a shop teacher. He lives and farms on the same land where he was raised and his father grew berries. He's a TeenPact dad and hosted us while we were in Michigan for the class.

Mr. DeLange gets up at 6 every morning to do chores before he goes to work. He's hard working and also one of the most subtly funny people I've met. I tried to figure out why I enjoyed being around him so much and then I realized it: Jesus is the key piece of his life. From Bible studies after meals to private devotions in the morning, Christ saturates everything he does. "The reason I'm so happy is because I've got Jesus." He even sacrificed celebrating his 50th birthday with his family to let them serve at TeenPact.

I've taken to asking men who are in their midlife how living over half their lives has changed their outlook for the rest of their lives. I had the chance to ask Mr. DeLange and he answered:
"Every year I give more than I did the year before and I always find that every year I have fewer needs than the years before...It's a heart issue; I've matured spiritually so that I love Jesus now more than I did last year and ten years and twenty-five years ago. The beautiful thing about the Bible is that it's so perfectly simple for the new believer and so deep and complicated for the mature believer." Mr. And Mrs. DeLange choose to live simply but are incredibly generous to everyone around them.
"I used to squirrel away money for retirement and worry about it. And then one day I realized that when I get to heaven, and see people who say the one thing they always wanted was a Bible and they never got one, and I had all this money, what am I going to say, ya know?" At the end of the day, it doesn't matter how nice of vacations or retirements we have. What matters is loving people like Jesus and telling others about the eternity we can have with him. I think we can all learn a little something from Mr. DeLange (Also, ice cream and farm strawberries is the breakfast of champions.)

Until next time,

Larry has a fascinating story. He was born into a troubled family with a father who was rarely around. At a young age, he got involved in drugs and became a high level dealer. His mother prayed for him every day, and those prayers had an effect. In his mid 20's he had a child, and decided to try and get out of drugs. He went to TeenChallenge where his life changed. A gentleman there handed him a Bible and told him to read it cover to cover and come to his own conclusions; not to read it through other's perspectives, but rather to see what his thoughts were. He spent two years doing just that and cleaning up his life. He began teaching pastors and has trained numerous pastors all across the nation. He's now happily married with a child, and works both as a pastor trainer and consultant. He had some incredible thoughts on basic theology, most of which are too complicated to write here. We talked about the times he met John MacArthur and John Piper, and what they had both taught him.

"I was at...a conference where John Piper was preaching. I happened to sit in the row behind him, and noticed how incredibly nervous he was to go preach. I asked him why...he said he didn't want to preach something that wasn't correct or would hurt Christ's message. I've never seen someone with so much reverence for preaching."

He also had incredible stories about the people the consulting people had brought him into contact with. The love of Jesus clearly shone through everything he did, and it reminded me of all the ways Jesus can use broken people like us.

This is Mr. Keith V.
He's a race car owner and driver and a bus driver on the side. He owns a bunch of cars (He told me about all of them and their details but I honestly can't remember all the intricacies) and spends much of the year traveling in an RV, traveling to races with his family. He holds the track record at the asphalt track south of Omaha. That's his passion.

Mr. V has a long history in the military with his grandpa's in the Navy, his father in the Army and then himself serving in the Navy. He served seven years aboard a carrier before deciding to retire and become a shop teacher amongst other things. Here's his view on life:
"I don't want to have millions and millions of dollars. I wanna live comfortably with my family and help some people who need it...The problem is folks want to make millions and everyone wants to be rich. That's all they want, is to have all this stuff. How can you live in five houses at once? Live comfortably and then help those who need it."

Mr. V shared numerous stories about how he helped everyone from single mothers to D league baseball players with his advice and his auto shop. However, they're too numerous to record here. But while talking to Mr. V I felt that I had found someone who truly understood what life is about. It's not all about getting money and riches but about being generous and spreading Christ's love. It's about desiring to help others and to love his family instead of loving the things of this world. I hope we can all be a little more like Mr. V.

Pastor Ty was the youth pastor at my church, Waypoint Church. I didn't go to the Children's ministry. I was always in the main service since I was five or six and vaguely recall Pastor Ty speaking while we were members at Trinity Church. After we left, he would come and speak every few months at our Church, and I remember laughing so hard at his sermons that I couldn't stop laughing. He brought so much life to the scriptures and his message, and I was thrilled to hear that he would be joining our Church in 2013.

I was able to hear almost every sermon he preached there. I am so thankful for that opportunity. In March of 2014, I was asked who my role model was. The first thought that came to my mind was Pastor Ty. They asked why? I responded that I loved his wittiness, and yet he got his point across and preached the gospel beautifully, letting God work through him. He touched so many people (From my perspective at the time; little did I know!) and I could see Christ through him. I loved to listen to his sermons and couldn't wait to hear him preach and re-listen to his sermons on podcast. ("If you're listening by podcast, where are you?! Just kidding.") He recommended a book called "Why Revival Tarries" by Leonard Ravenhill, from the pulpit. I purchased it, and am still working through it but the things that God is revealing through it are incredible. He and I chatted every once and a while over social media, and before my first TeenPact class as a leader, I asked him to pray for me.

I had the opportunity, about a year ago, to join the youth group that he lead. My parents had given the go ahead if that's that I wanted to do. I procrastinated and eventually declined, a decision I now deeply regret. However, even though I didn't go to the youth meetings, I still felt that he was my youth pastor. He had a "puberty spirit" and he still ministered to me.

I received the news in the middle of a conference in Ohio that Friday morning. I didn't really have time to process the information. It struck me like a train, but at the same time, I couldn't think about it or process it. I spent two hours volunteering doing political phone calls for AFP Missouri that evening and the waiting music that was set on the phone was Christian worship music. I would break down and start to cry every time one came on. I left early and went back to my hotel room.

I was still in shock. I turned on the song "In the Hands of God" by the Newsboys. The first words that hit me were "We have raised up hopes in our City's heart, we have followed fragile dreams; but only one can take the measures of our souls. We have stumbled over the trials of life and we've wrestled the unseen but only one can calm the storm inside our souls. In the hands of God we will fall. Rest for the restless. Hope for the sinner. In the hands of God." I wept for fifteen minutes. "and when all is finished and we face the fierce-some power of death, only one has over come the gates of hell. In the hands of God." The opening of that song, I feel, describes their life incredibly well.

I remember Pastor Ty as a role model. Someone who gave his life to Jesus, and let God work through his heart. God gave him a passion, a vision, a piece of his heart to work on this earth. And he followed it, and changed so many lives. He was witty, and funny, and yet humble. I want to be that. I want Jesus to work through me. I want my gifts, my talents to be Jesus' and I "want my life to honor him and bless a bunch of other people." The way he loved his wife, the way he taught his kids, I want to be that. I want my kids to know who Pastor Ty and Little Terri were; they impacted my life forever, and they're now dancing with Jesus, because HE conquered the gates of hell.

The last altar call at my Church that Pastor Ty ever did, he had a call for those who had lived a good life, yet were still holding on, and wanted control a part of their life instead of giving it all over. He touched me through that altar call. And I pray that I'll take the baton, and I'll carry it forward. There are so many more things I could write that othershave expressed, so I'll leave it here.

"If your Bible is falling apart, your life probably isn't."
"Oh death where is your victory? Oh death where is your sting?"
Ah, Kumbaya.
Sorry that it has taken so long for me to write these updates! We have been very busy. I have to make this short, as I am tired and are all ready to go to bed.

Day 4:
(Still in Richmond) We visited Tredegar Iron Works, where much of the Confederate's cannon power was manufactured. We also toured the Confederate White House where Jefferson Davis and his family lived during the Civil War. Afterwards, we went to a massive mansion that was nearby Richmond. It was huge and very opulent. Mom and I got to do a tour of the house and grounds.

Day 5:
(Leaving Richmond) We visited Cold Harbor, a battlefield in the Civil War during 1864. 15,000 men were either wounded or killed there, 2/3 of which were Union. We walked 2 1/2 miles through the walking tour. It was one of the coolest battlefields that I have seen. Everywhere we walked were original trenches dug by Union and Confederate soldiers. Some were very visible and others were tucked away in the forest. The Battle of Cold Harbor was the first time that trench warfare was used in the United States. The battle lasted two weeks, and much of the battlefield is still intact.
Afterwards, we drove south to Yorktown Battlefield. This is the place where the final major battle of the Revolutionary War was fought. We got to hear a park ranger speak (One of the best ranger talks that I have ever heard.) as well as do a car tour throughout the battlefield. We saw where the British earthworks, the French Lines, the American Lines, as well as several of the batteries. We also got to see Redoubts #9 and #10, two of the most famous parts of the battlefield. Alexander Hamilton and the Marquis de Lafayette planned and executed attacks on the two small forts. The fall of the forts caused the fall of Yorktown. Finally we got to see the place where the British and German forces surrendered. Afterwards we stayed in Yorktown.

Day 6:
(Leaving Yorktown for North Carolina) Today, we drove from Yorktown to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. We stopped to see Kitty Hawk and the place where Wilbur and Orville Wright flew the first airplane. It is constantly windy here, and you can see why it was a good place to practice flying. After visiting the park, we headed to the northern area of the Outer Banks, to our hotel. It is right on the beach, and it is just a two minute walk over a large dune to the beach. The three boys spent several hours in the water this afternoon, dodging waves. It is really pretty here.

Today we traveled six hours to get to Richmond Virginia. Instead of going a few more hours to Fredricksburg, we chose to stay in Richmond. We spent most of the day driving. When we got to Richmond, most of the museums were closed, but we were able to walk around the riverfront of Richmond and see many of the sights there. We saw numerous moorings of bridges and buildings that the Confederate Army blew up on their way out of town. We also saw one of the largest cannon foundries that was in use during the Civil War in the south.
Tomorrow we will stay in Richmond. The plan is to visit The Confederate White House and the Museum of the Civil War in Richmond, before heading out to the Cold War battlefield. The battlefield is about 15 miles north of Richmond. This week is the 150th Anniversary of the battle, so there will be re-enactors and a ceremony. It will be cool. I promise I will have more pictures tomorrow. Thanks for reading!
Sorry this is a late post. Yesterday was a loooong day. We got pummeled with storms at the hotel, and even lost electricity for two hours! The storm was moving the same direction we were, so we waited to leave the hotel until 10 AM. We drove through Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia, where we are staying. We arrived around 8 PM eastern time. (We're now in the eastern time zone.) Just as we started unloading, the storm that had been behind us that we had been out running started pouring on us. It was incredible the amount of water that came down in those 20 minutes. (Omaha, friends, I have a feeling you can relate.....) However, even though Dad and I looked like drenched rats, we managed to get all of the luggage into the hotel.

Today we are not sure what we are doing. The original plan was to go to Fredericksburg Virginia, which is a Civil War battlefield. Unfortunately, most of the park is under renovation. So, it will be interesting to see what happens. We will drive into Virginia and I'm quite confident we will find something interesting to see. Check back later for tomorrow (um, today's) update! Thanks for reading!
I am writing this post from Springfield Illinois. We left our house this morning at 7:30 and drove to Springfield Illinois. We drove around 7 hours.

This afternoon we went to Abraham Lincoln's home and tomb. It was awesome to see the place where Lincoln lived. We saw the place where the Republican Party's delegates officially gave him the Party's nomination, and his bedroom. Much of the furniture was original and it was cool to think of Abraham Lincoln sitting at a desk, writing letters, or shaving with his shaving kit. I don't have many pictures today, but I will try to get some tomorrow.

We missed most of the severe weather today but we will get hit tonight. Tomorrow we will be driving in the remains of this storm for much of the day. We will drive 12 hours to Charleston, West Virginia. I will try to post some pictures tomorrow.
Thanks for reading!
Major things have happened since I last blogged about my NHD project. A month ago I told you all that I had received an invite from the National League of POW/MIA Families to present my documentary at their national convention. (There will be around a thousand people there!) I will be able to give a two minute introduction before showing my documentary. I wrote that I knew that God wasn't finished with the film, and the the invitation was him moving. That's not all.

However, two weeks after my Mom got a call from the Pentagon. It was the Assistant Chief of Staff for the Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel. She said that a family member of a missing soldier had gotten a hold of the documentary, and had passed it to someone in the Pentagon. The documentary made its way up the chain of command all the way to Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel. Mr. Hagel, it turns out, was very impressed, and asked to meet the person who made the film. The Assistant Chief of Staff tracked me down and called Mom. She said that Secretary Hagel wanted to meet me. She offered to give us an hour tour of the Pentagon and then said that the Secretary could meet with us for ten minutes! So, on June 16th, my family is going to get a tour of the Pentagon and meet Secretary Hagel for a few minutes! I am in shock as I write this. God has given me such an awesome opportunity. I hope that my documentary will continue to touch people as I go forward.

All that said, we will leave Omaha on Tuesday, June 2nd. We will go through Illinois and visit Abraham's home. Then, we will go through Virginia and visit numerous Revolutionary War and Civil War sites. Then we will turn south to the Carolina's. After a few days there, we will head to Washington D.C. for the POW/MIA conference, NHD and the Pentagon tour. (To any prospective burglars: We have one of my Dad's college military friend staying at our house. He's a second amendment guy. 'nuff said.)

I would like to blog our adventures as we go. So, like last year, I will do a daily update. Hopefully I will be able to incorporate some video as well. I hope that you enjoy the upcoming posts! Thanks for reading!
This year, the 26th of May is Memorial Day.
Many see Memorial Day as the spring version of Veterans' Day. This is far from
true. Veterans' Day is the day that we remember those who served our country in
the military. Memorial Day is the day we remember those who died while defending
the United States and the freedom that it represents. One example of this
sacrifice is Stanley Dwyer, who saved hundreds of lives while sacrificing his
own.

Stanley Dwyer was born in rural Kansas in 1916. He was an athletic
young man who enjoyed playing baseball and doing 4-H. His family moved to
Nebraska when he was a teenager. He joined the Merchant Marines in 1939,
and the United States Air Force in 1941, after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He
trained in Nevada to become the pilot of a B-17 bomber. He was then assigned to
Florida for a few months before being shipped out to England to begin flying
bombing raids.<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">

Every other day, Stan and his nine man crew flew bombing raids
over Nazi controlled Europe. These raids were fraught with risk. The B-17's
that the Americans flew had only enough fuel to make it to the target and back
with no diversions. Many barely made it back to their air bases before running
out of fuel. In addition, the Germans were constantly flooding the European sky
with flak, or small pieces of metal fired from an anti-aircraft cannon. Some
pilots reported that when flying over German military bases, the sky would turn
black with all of the flak that was being fired at them. To make things even
worse, the B-17s were not bulletproof, and there was very little that the crew
could do except hope and pray that they would not get hit. The survival rate
for a United States' combat pilot over Europe during World War II was 50%
over twenty five raids. This rate was worse than almost all other combat units
during the war.<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">

On May 10th, 1944 pilot Stanley Dwyer and his nine crew members climbed
aboard their plane for what would be their 21st mission. If they could
make it through four more, they would get a few weeks break at home before
returning to duty. The raid this day would be on the Austrian city of Wiener
Neustadt, the location of most of the Nazi airplane factories. Stanley’s plane
was about 100 miles from Wiener Neustadt, near the back of the formation, when
its engine was hit by flak. The bomber fell into a dive and quickly caught on
fire.<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">

Stan and his co-pilot continued to fly the plane in an attempt to

men left inside the plane continued to fly it. <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">

At the last second, it appeared that Stanley might have found a
place to land his plane-- a large field of grass next to a village in the
Austrian countryside. Unfortunately, there were numerous houses in the
clearing, as well as people milling about. With an almost full load of bombs in
the bomb bay, there would be a massive secondary explosion once the plane hit
the ground. Stan knew that if he put the plane down there, he might have
a chance at surviving, but those in the houses and village were doomed. Stanley
chose to save those on the ground.<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">

recalled that he could see the pilot as he turned the plane and headed for the
forest. The plane was only a few meters from the ground. In a last ditch
attempt to put the plane down safely, Stan aimed for a small clearing in the
forest. Unfortunately, it appears he lost control and consciousness as the
plane fell from the sky crashing into the forest. The following explosion
killed all five men aboard. <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">

Almost 65 years later, Stanley’s brother and niece traveled to the
site in Austria with the United States government, to search for the fallen
heroes and bring them home. They had spent almost a decade searching for the
crash site. Unfortunately, the heroes' remains were not found. The secondary
explosion had all but obliterated the plane and its contents. However, when the
group met those that lived in the nearby village, they found that they
remembered Stanley, knew what he had done, and were filled with gratitude
toward him and his crew. They credited their lives, and the lives of their children
and grandchildren to Stanley, who, instead of trying to save himself, had
chosen to save those in the village. Stanley Dwyer's memory lives on in the
hearts and minds of his relatives, and also the Austrians whose lives he saved.

I just wanted to write a quick update on my National History Day project.

I have received an extraordinary offer to show my film at the annual meeting of The National League of POW/MIA Families. The League is a group of relatives of those still missing from the Vietnam War. They lobby the government on accounting issues and also are a support network for families still missing relatives. Their national convention is the second week of June in Washington D.C.. The event will be attended by hundreds of family members of men still missing, as well as numerous military officials, many whom I have read about during my research! These are the people who are affected by the work that my documentary's about, and I believe that they will appreciate the documentary more than any National History Day judge ever could. I will be presenting on Thursday night at the memorial and candlelight banquet. The banquet is one of the larger events that they hold during the conference. I will give a brief introduction to my documentary, before showing my documentary to the attendees. I can't say how much of an honor this is. I believe that this is a part of God's plan for this documentary.

As the conference is in Washington D.C., this means another trip for the Myers! I will give you updates on the trip when we get underway. The conference is from June 11th through the 14th. The candlelight memorial banquet is June 12th. We will also be in Washington while my brother competes in the national competition of NHD, so this will be a long trip. I look forward to blogging about it! Thanks for reading!
Yesterday was the State National History Day competition. I competed with my film "Recovering the Missing: Their Right, Our Responsibility." This was my favorite film that I have produced, and my most professional looking piece of work ever. Unfortunately, I placed third and will not proceed to the national competition in Washington D.C. this June. While this really stinks, I feel that God has another purpose for this film, and that he will prevail. I am currently looking into my options on what to do with the film. In the meantime, I wanted to share the documentary with you, and see what you think of it. Please leave your comments below. If you would like a copy of my bibliography and process paper, I can email you a copy, if you leave a comment. I hope you enjoy the film. Thanks for reading!

I’m sorry that my blog has been silent since Christmas. But that's because I've been working on my National History Day project for 2014. This year I am working alone. (Will decided to take the year off.) This year, the theme is: "Rights and Responsibilities". My topic is 'The Right of Fallen Soldiers to Come Home, and the United States' Responsibility to Bring Home the Fallen.' Below is my thesis paragraph:

The United States has not always held the same respect for
its fallen that it has today. Up until the Civil War, soldiers were buried
where they fell, and, unless they had some sort of ID on them, they were
unidentified. Slowly, our respect for our fallen countryman has grown. Perhaps it is because we understand, that instead
of fighting in a royal army, named after a monarch, our soldiers fight as the
United States of America. And America is all of us. We the People send our
young men off into war to protect us and our liberties.
Many give the ultimate sacrifice so that we may stay free. It is their right to
come home; they have given the ultimate sacrifice. They have payed for that
right with their lives. Now it is our responsibility to ensure that they
receive that right. It is our responsibility to give our war dead an honored
welcome home. We are one of the only nations in the world that feels this
responsibility. The United States follows honors this responsibility in
numerous ways. Today, the Joint Mortuary Affairs Command (JMAC) brings home the
dead just a day or two after they have fallen. The Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command
(JPAC) brings home the fallen from past
wars. It is in this way that our nation honors the dead, and brings them home.
It is their right, and our responsibility.

So that is my NHD project for this year! I am wrapping up my research, and will begin making the documentary before long. I have several major interviews coming up that I'm really excited about! Once I finish competition, I will post the documentary here. I will continue to post updates as I continue to work! Thanks for reading everyone!

Due to popular demand, the Christmas Blogging Bash is back! This year, a couple of people will be doing a blog post. At the bottom of this post, you will find links to their posts. However, you need to read this post first!

This year, my topic is the Mystery of the Magi. So here we go.
While there is a lot of tradition around the Magi, I'm going to try to avoid that and just state what we know, and what we suspect.

What is a Magi Anyhow?
First of all, the word Magi is kind of made up. The word in Greek means astrologers, or magicians that watch and predict the future. But who wants to say that instead of being visited by kings, Jesus was visited by a bunch of geeky astrologers who were the leaders of a cult! So they just took an old French term that meant 'the magicians' and dropped the end of it, making the word Magi. Some versions also say Wise Men, which is probably a better translation, but less magnificent sounding.

Who Were the Magi?
The Wise Men were astrologers, or people who watched the stars. They were probably a part of the far eastern cult Zoroastrianism. This brings up an interesting question; Did God use astrology to announce the birth of Jesus? The answer is yes. God sent the message to the Magi using the stars. The Magi tell Herod such in Matthew 2:2, "Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him." (Italics added by me). God can sometimes use evil practices to show people the truth, but that's a whole other post.

What Were Their Names and Where did They Come From?
While we don't know the names of the Magi, how many there were, or exactly where they came from, we can make an educated guess. The Greek word used is generally used when referring to China or India. However, Isaiah writes in chapter 60 that "Herds of camels<span class="crossreference" style="font-weight: bold; vertical-align: top;" value="(P)"> will cover your land, young camels of Midian<span class="crossreference" style="background-color: white; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-weight: bold; vertical-align: top;" value="(Q)"> and Ephah. And all from Sheba<span class="crossreference" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-weight: bold; vertical-align: top;" value="(S)"> will come, bearing gold and incense." This chapter is generally seen as a prophecy about Jesus coming back to earth. The reference to Sheba is interesting, because in the Bible, especially the Old Testament, Sheba refers to Ethiopia. Now, that is a long way from China! So it seems like the Magi actually came from different parts of the world, and actually met in Jerusalem! That is a miracle within itself. That three different men from different parts of the world would all see the same star and then come to Jerusalem to worship him and then meet is simply miraculous. According to tradition, the other Magi was from Persia, but I can find no evidence of this.

When Did They Come?
According to Matthew, the Magi came and visited Jesus while he was living in a house; "And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother..." So, he was not still in the manger as many images and nativities show today. Jesus was between 41 days and 2 years old when the magi arrived. Jesus was taken to the temple to be dedicated after Mary's 40 day period of uncleanliness was over. The magi had to have come after Jesus' presentation in the temple, that is, after Jesus was 40 days old. Why? Because, Matthew tells us that after the magi departed, an angel warned Joseph to flee to Egypt, because Herod would try to kill Jesus. According to Scripture, Joseph, Mary and Jesus left that very night and went to Egypt. This would have left no time for the presentation in the temple, which we know happened. To see when Jesus was born, please read this article that I wrote last year. Basically, The Magi came sometime after 6 B.C. but before 4 B.C.

What Did They Bring and Why?

Everyone knows the Magi brought gold, frankincense, and myrrh, but what is the significance of that? Actually, there is a lot of significance. In the ancient times, gold was only given to kings. Thus, the gift of gold to baby Jesus was quite an astonishing thing. It was a less then subtle hint as to what the Magi believed about Jesus. Frankincense was used as a perfume, and an expensive one at that. Myrrh was used for medicinal purposes, and was believed to be able to cure many diseases. These were all very expensive gifts, and were only given to the most important of people. Tradition says that Mary and Joseph sold the gifts to finance their time in Egypt!

Why Does It Matter?
Now you've read the rest of the post and you're thinking, "Interesting, but why do I care?" And that's hard question. Why do the Magi matter? Well they matter in three ways:
1. They financed the trip to Egypt that save Jesus and fulfilled a prophecy,
2. They fulfilled the prophecy from Isaiah 60
3. The main significance of the Magi is that God so wonderfully revealed the identity of Jesus as Messiah and King of the Jews to these Gentile Magi. (And to the rest of us who aren't Jewish and are considered Gentiles.) It seems to be a wonderful fulfillment of the prophet Simeon's prophecy, that Jesus would be, "a light of revelation to the Gentiles" Luke 2:31.

Kennedy was shot and killed. It is still debated who did it, and with what, but that's not what this article is about. While I may not have agreed with President Kennedy on many of his policies, that's not what I want to discuss here. Instead, I would like to give a tribute the President. His death changed our nation, for better or for worse, forever.Kennedy was intelligent, good looking, and he had charisma. Yet, like all of us, he was a fallen man, and his life reflects that. But during his presidency, he had numerous achievements, as well as decisions that would change the world, I will just mention a few.

Kennedy's handling of the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Stopped a crisis the would probably have lead to a nuclear war.
Kennedy's Atmospheric Nuclear Test Ban
Stopped nuclear testing in the atmosphere
Kennedy's encouraging of the NASA and the Space Race
Helped start and continue the Moon program as well as the space race.
Kennedy's Work with the Civil Right Movement
Laid the groundwork for the Civil Rights Act of 1964
Kennedy's Treaty with Israel
Laid the groundwork for today's friendship with Israel
This is one of my favorite music videos of all time. It is a parody on the Song 'To late to Apologize' by One Republic and Timbaland. And it is hilarious. The basis is that the Founding Fathers said 'its to late to apologize' to King George III. The ending is a little weird, but it is still hilarious! Enjoy.
While I was looking through some new Myers family history documents, I stumbled upon an amazing story of a family ancestor named George Saltzman. He was the brother of my Great great great great great great great Grandfather Anthony Saltzman.

Before I get into the story, I would like to say that the research in this story was not done by me, but rather by a distant relative by the name of Norman Myers. His hobby was genealogy, and he traveled the world (Quite literally) looking for Myers ancestors and their records. When he died, he left behind mountains of research, most of which has never been published or shared. He intended to write a book, but died before he got to it. I have received bits and pieces of his work, but I have never read it all. All that to say, I would like to thank Norman and his nephew, Alan Caldwell, for researching, discovering, and then sharing this information.

We don't know exactly when George Saltzman was born. What we do know is that he came from Germany to America in 1751 with his family. The family settled in Clinton County, Pennsylvania. When George came of age, he moved several miles north of the family onto his own farm. There is no evidence that he ever married or that he left behind any direct descendants.

On
June 14, 1775 the Continental Congress authorized formation of six companies of
expert riflemen from Pennsylvania. John
Adams, in a letter to his wife, spoke
of the vote to raise ten companies of southern riflemen. These men were described for their “skillful use of a peculiar kind of musket, called a rifle.”

General
Washington daily expected the arrival of the “Rifle Companies” which used the deadly rifle. This weapon was almost unknown to the New
Englanders but the Pennsylvania gunsmiths had for a number of years been making
the weapon. It differed from the musket
in that spiral grooves within the barrel caused the ball to spin making it
accurate. The piece of greased leather
around the ball clung to the rifle barrel holding in all the expanding gas. In addition to increasing the accuracy, this expanded the range.

One of these rifle companies was commanded by
Captain John Lowdon of Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. Most of the members of this company were
sworn in on June 29, 1775. On July 1,
1775 George Saltzman enlisted at Derr’s Mill in the company commanded by
Captain Lowdon which was within Colonel William Thompson’s Battalion of
Riflemen.

In late July of 1775, the regiment moved out and marched to Boston. There, they were attached to the Second Regiment of the Army of the Colonies. They were involved in several small skirmishes in Massachusetts, current day Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.

After his stint in northern New England, he was moved to Long Island, and fought there at the Battle of Long Island. After the Americans lost this battle, the Continental Army retreated through New York, New Jersey, and then Pennsylvania. On October 16, 1776 on a clothing account at
Philadelphia, George Saltzman drew one jacket, one pair of britches, one shirt,
one pair of shoes, one pair of stockings, and one blanket. He was a member of Captain James Parr’s
Company at that time with the documents endorsed to show it was part of Colonel
Hand’s Regiment. This was the last official surviving record of George Saltzman. However, he is not believed to have died right after that. In fact, a record in Clinton County dated 1779 says that he didn't die (Or at least, that no word of his death came until) until 1778 or 79. He is believed to have continued fighting all the way through the autumn of 1777 and perhaps longer.

This is where the story gets interesting. Not long after Saltzman drew his last consignment of clothes, Washington and his troops crossed the Delaware River. Captain James Parr's company was not only there, but, according to records and accounts of the battle, played a key part in taking Trenton and then later Princeton. After these battles, they were attached to the army of Daniel Morgan, (Ironically another of our ancestors, but that's a story for another day.) and moved to upper New York.

That autumn, (1777) the 1st and 2nd battles of Saratoga occurred. Many of you know the basic outline of the battle, but for the sake of clarity, I will write a quick summary. British General Burgyone was trying to capture Albany, New York. The American army of Horatio Gates, Benedict Arnold, and Daniel Morgan stood in their way. The British tried to break through on September 19th, but the battle ended in a draw, with both sides withdrawing from the field with numerous casualties. However, Burgyone was determined to get to Albany. So on October 7th, he sent one of his subordinates, General Simon Frasier to try and break through the American line. It is here that my ancestor comes into play. The tide of the battle was just starting to swing to the British, and the Americans began to panic. American Captain James Parr recognized the signs of defeat, and decided to do something drastic to stop it. He sent sniper Timothy Murphy of the Pennsylvania Rifle Company up a huge tree, and told him to shoot down the British. Murphy decided to aim big. He searched for General Frasier himself. He found him and then, at a distance of 300 yards, he shot him dead. Many historians believe that shot to be the turning point in the War. The British panicked and ran, and the Americans pursued. Just a few days later, Burgyone surrendered. He lost most of his 7,000 troops in the surrender, a massive amount in those days. The awesome thing is, George Saltzman was in the same company as Timothy Murphy and probably at the base of the tree when Frasier was shot. Just to think that I had relative there to witness that moment is awesome. I have read and studied so much about that war, that battle, that moment, and yet I never ever suspected that I had a close relative who witnessed it.

This story has a sad and a happy ending. The sad thing is that Saltzman disappeared not long after that. Family tradition says that he was killed by Indians in a skirmish just after the Battle of Saratoga. While there is no evidence that that is true, the family probably got that story from one of the soldiers who did make it home from the Pennsylvania Sharp Shooters, and therefore, it is the most likely ending. The happy ending, is that Saltzman did not die in vain. The United States continued on, and won against unthinkable odds and became its own sovereign country. It continues on today.

George Saltzman has an unblemished military record. He was a man who gave everything he loved for the love of his country. He gave his life so that we could live free. I hope that his memory will never be forgotten. Thanks for reading.

I have been looking at some of my most recent posts, and I realized that I have wandered from the original goal of my blog; to share genealogy and to share some of my knowledge of history. So, I have written a short story on the steel penny of 1943. (Please hold tight! Pictures will come Saturday morning!)

The year was 1942. America was entering the midway point of her first year in World War II. The government was feverishly whipping up patriotic fervor, and the nation began to respond. People were buying war bonds, wives were working, men were going off to war, and the patriotic sons and daughters of the country were gathering scrap metal. Huge scrap drives were held to try and get metal to build tanks, planes, and trucks. Oh and one other thing: Bullets. Several billion bullets were made throughout the war. However, each bullet required a copper casing. These casing were necessary to the bullets. They contained the powder that was required to fire the bullet. The United States was beginning to run short on this precious metal, and the scrap drives around the country just weren't producing enough copper. So, the US Mint decided to take the copper out of the penny and the nickel. The nickel was easy; the mint just added more silver to the alloy. (yes, that makes them more valuable.) The penny however, was a different story. The penny had had basically the same alloy since its creation in the early 19th century. Every once and a while the weight was slightly changed, but generally it stayed the same- about 90% copper with tin, lead, and aluminium mixed in. Now, that alloy had to change. Scientists experimented with other metals, plastics, and even glass! However, in the end, they chose a low grade steel coin with a super small (super small as in .001 inch thick) coating of zinc to keep the metal from rusting- 99% Low grade steel, 1% zinc. Due to the steel, they are the first, (and the last) US coins that responded to a magnet.

The Mint director announced the change on December 23rd, 1942. That January, the Mint began pumping the new pennies into the system. Unfortunately, the public did not like them. Vending machines refused to take them, thinking that they were metal slugs. The zinc wore off quickly, meaning that the coins rusted and fell apart. They were also mistaken for dimes due to their brilliance when they were fresh of of the press. Due to the sudden outcry, the Mint immediately began to look for new ways to make the coins, but they continued to make them at all three of the Mints. (San Francisco, Denver, and Philadelphia.) At the end of the year, 1,093,838,670 steel cents were minted.

Beginning in late 1943, used shell casings were picked up and recycled. These recycled cartridges had enough copper in them to make millions of coins, which the mint promptly did. Beginning in January 1944, the mint switched back to copper coins, therefore ending the run of the steel cent. Although it was only produced for one year, many of these cents still exist. This is because many American citizens began hoarding the coins, realizing that they were special. While the government bought back some of these coins, they did not publicize the buy-back and did not recover many of the coins. Today you can buy a steel cent in good looking condition for $ .50.

So there you have it. The story of one of America's most quirky and interesting coins. Thanks for reading! I hope to have another article like this one out soon!
On August 29th, at 8 in the morning in central Germany, German SWAT teams stormed the home of the Wunderlich Family. The Wunderlich family had refused to stop homeschooling their children, even after the German government threatened to take away their children. Mr. and Mrs. Wunderlich were treated like horrible criminals and were not allowed to say goodbye to their children. The German SWAT team took the children and informed the Wunderlichs that they should not expect to see them any time soon.

The treatment of the Wunderlichs as well as other German Homeschooling breaks many international treaties as well as the basic human right of parents being able to choose the education of their child. Please keep this family in your thoughts and prayers, as they began a long legal battle to try to re-claim their children.

I just wanted to show you some pictures of our 9/11 Never Forget Memorial. We had a great turnout.
We had 15 volunteers who came at 6:30 AM to help us set up. It took us two hours to put all 2,977 flags into the ground. (It took ten minutes to pick them up.) Our main visitors were Moms with elementary aged children explaining to their children what the flags represented and why they were there. We also had a Mom that was a Red Cross volunteer. She said that her job was to call the victims families and tell them what had happened. In the end, the memorial helped many people remember, which was the goal. Thanks to the sponsors, parents, and the volunteers who helped make it possible.
Here are some pictures:
As some of you may know I am the chairman of a Young Americans for Freedom Chapter. YAF is an organization that informs students about both sides of the political spectrum. They have an each year called the "9/11 Never Forget Project." Students assemble a memorial to the innocent victims of 9/11, erecting one American flag for each innocent person killed in the horrible attacks. They put up 2,977 flags to commemorate the 12th anniversary of 9/11.

My chapter and I have decided to participate in the project. We will be erecting our memorial at Southwest Church of Christ on 127th and Center. Below is a flier.
