A few quick facts:
Born on February 12th, 1809 in Kentucky
Served as an officer in the Army during the Black Hawk war
Served as a Senator
Had all but two of his children die during his lifetime
Lived in Springfield Illinois
He was a lawyer
He only ever owned one house
He was elected by less than 50% of the population
After he left Springfield to go to Washington, he never returned
Served as Commander in Chief to the Union Army during the Civil War
Freed slaves in the South with the Emancipation Proclamation and was a proponent of the 14th amendment
Died just five days after the surrender of Rober E. Lee's army
